To demonstrate the reliability of name-based methods we compare the intergenerational mobility of the two combatant groups in the Finnish Civil War of 1918. Both conventional and name-based methods indicate substantially higher downward mobility among members of the socialist “Red Guard” as compared to the conservative “White Guard”.
Of course, correlation does not imply causation.
Notably, the socialists lost the finish civil war, and losing a civil war could very well cause intergenerational downward mobility.
Is there a similar analysis of the US civil war? What would it show about the mobility of that losing side?
Anyway, basing it on names is interesting!
