If you're living in a joint family, you don't need to think of freedom as parents.
I live with my parents-in-law for one month every year.
My father-in-law confessed that it took both him and his wife to supervise my children. I think he would go mad if he has to take care of them on a long-term basis

I believe you. It's here is a tradition that grandkids grow up under the supervision of grandparents rather than the parents. It's a norm and they ever complain not until they feel the kids need the parents — like when they grow up and need help in education.
