This is nonsense. You were playing not to win but to defeat someone. Your mindset wasn't one of that a winner. While we all knew that we'd win. We don't really care who were playing against.
It's a very common defensive strategy to try to take one player out and make the others beat you. In this case, neither part happened.
Defense doesn't win you battles afaik.
