These octopuses are toxic both when biting with their keratinous beaks (attack) – injecting TTX-laden saliva in the process – and when consumed (defense). They are the only known octopus species capable of delivering lethal bites to humans.
A minimum amount of 1.5 mg of tetrodotoxin (TTX) is lethal to humans, and death can occur within 17 minutes.
Incidentally, it's interesting to note that males inject TTX into the hearts of females during copulation!
