This isn't how someone is creating 3k or so items daily. 
Do you really think someone is doing hours of labour doing so?

 if you disconnect your wallet, empty your account of cowboy credits, and try to make a post, a QR code will pop up for you to pay.  If you don't pay, the post still enters into the database and thus gets an item number, but it doesn't show up anywhere, hence "ghost items".
