“What the hell are Zaps? Or what's the difference between Lightning tips and Zaps?
Simply put, Zaps are Nostr aware Lightning tips. They are integrated with Nostr in a way that allows the sats sent to be tallied and displayed on an individual user's note. Everyone can then see the value of that individual note. That is the key point.
If your Lightning wallet does not support Zaps, you can still send Lightning tips, they will just not be counted and displayed on Nostr. You can still send and receive sats! This is the whole point of Value for Value.
The only Lightning wallets that support Nostr integration (NIP-57) are the following:
strike.army
vida.page
stacker.news
bitcoin jungle
ln.tips (LightningTipBot)
Many others are working on adding support for this. This includes Wallet of Satoshi, BTCPay server, Bitcoin Beach, and probably many more.”

A note: the zap/nostr support is needed by the recipient part, you can zap with any LN client!

How come so few wallets seem to support zaps but on nostr they are flying around like crazy. I think it's because you cab zap with any wallet but you can only recieve if it supports zap. Yes that must be it.

On the surface it looks and acts just like our lightning bolt. The difference is that Stacker News is a centralized web site. Having this on the nostr protocol makes it viral and uncensorable and decentralized. The network effect is incredibly powerful.

siggy.......
pleb lira?
yeah the zaps are traceable to that event that was tipped, so you can track the amount of tips a certain post generated.
and since its code, other wallets are starting to implement it

Yeah I've been using Amethyst! It supports tipping users, but not zaps afaik.
Small difference really, was just curious.

Its just a custom note/event for tips, so clients that support the NIP can allocate the lightning invoices that are settled to the user sending and receiving it, they grab that meta data and then add it to posts or profiles, and it builds a list of contirbutors
It allows you to see who your top tippers are and your best performing content

Internet native money. A zap is a tip you recieve for the value you gave in return in the form of content. Like a good waitress/waiter that made people feel good with themselves and got tip. Is like cash when you have it in your hands but digital (no permission to ask, no bank to account for YOUR money).

Feels like we have too many words to describe the same kinds of Lightning payments for content.

For me zaps are just the new way to call instant lightning tips with a press of a button, like here in Stacker News. I think the first time I read it called zaps was from the people of Starbackr.
On Nostr the amount zapped in a post will appear only if the poster has NIP-57.

they are called zaps because they also show the cumulative tipping amount and each user who left a tip on a specific note

They were already calling them zaps before that, not that I care anyway.

I'm also a little confused. Are they really just a Lightning payment to someone's LN-URL or Lightning Address? Or is there more to it? I asked some friendly stranger to send me a zap on nostr general to see what would happen and they just sent some sats to my lightning address, I think. BUT NIP-57 sounds like there is a special nostr message for zaps. So maybe I'm using the terminology wrong? If I request a zap, should I be using a nostr client that can post a NIP-57 compliant message that has an invoice or qr code with my LN-URL?
