I find Canvas very useful, but holy crap, even if you subscribe, they still harass you all the time - "for only XX, you could have the premium pack" and stuff like that, blocking your main work screen all the time.
I was thinking about trying to learn Gimp, but it's a little daunting, considering how rarely I use image software.
Beat way to learn gimp is to use it. Give yourself a goal (like making a certain kind of meme every week), then watch tutorials on how to so it. You'll be able to use gimp in no time!
I think you mean Canva? I've heard mixed things and my experience using it mirrors yours. @Scoresby is a Gimp pro. He might have some tips on getting started.
