That wasn't the reason. The people you're describing are ideologically socialist. GDP growth was one talking point but not the main justification they used to win popular support. Their argument was that the proper role of good government is to help everyone (from each according to their ability, to each according to their needs, a limited allowance for half-free markets as long as they're subservient to government regulations, climate change is a serious problem, etc.). It's a socialist movement that shares far more in common with the Communist Party of China than with libertarian ideology, and the results should be taken as warning of what happens when you allow the government to make economic decisions on behalf of some faceless blob of masses that they call "the people."

Every other war was an expense and a net loss.
