The boy found 《神秘的恐龙世界》 by himself, so he must really like dinosaurs these days.
This book is based on a simple storyline — how a teacher took his students to a dinosaur exhibition. This makes it very relatable for your child if you intend to take him to visit the current exhibition at Science Centre. The rule of three was employed to great effect. Three dinosaurs were introduced, specifically 霸王龙 — bà wáng lóng — T-Rex, 翼手龙 — yì shǒu lóng — Pterosaur (flying reptile) & 雷龙 — léi lóng — Brontosaurus. This was perfect for my boy who has a short attention span.
Despite its brevity, it didn’t hold back any punches as it found space to convey the reason behind the dinosaurs’ extinction (Ice Age) and how they were forced to migrate in order to survive. It used the term 迁徙, which was completely Greek to me and required me to use ChatGPT to learn the hanyu pinyin. From this, I appreciated how the focus was on telling a meaningful tale and not dumbing down the vocabulary even if the target audience was kindergarten kids.
This book is best savoured at Fu Shan Gardens at Woodlands Street 81. This playground showcases fascinating dinosaur replicas, which sets the perfect mood for consuming this book.
Looking forward to introducing new idioms like 横行霸道,小心翼翼,手忙脚乱,雷电交加 once my boy masters the reading of these three dinosaurs.
