We’re launching BitDevs Zambia: Bitcoin OSS Campus Ignition, an ambitious initiative to visit 8 of Zambia’s largest universities, partnering with campus software development clubs to run hands-on workshops introducing student developers to open Bitcoin development.
Our community, BitDevs Zambia (https://twitter.com/BitDevsZambia), has been growing fast. BitDevs Zambia was born in early 2025 when Anita, founder of Bitcoin for Fairness, spoke at our founding event in Lusaka. Since then, we’ve held regular BitDevs Socratic Seminars, and in August 2025 we ran Zambia’s first Lightning Developer Bootcamp in Lusaka. One of the participants continued working on his bootcamp project, which resulted in the launch of https://bit2kwacha.info/, a practical Bitcoin tool built locally.
Currently, several of our members are participating in the global ₿OSS Challenge, an initiative for developers serious about starting a career in Bitcoin OSS.
On January 15, two of our members were recognized among the winners of the global Breez Time2Build 2025 challenge: https://blog.breez.technology/time2build-meet-the-2025-winners-1d8b11501ad9
These milestones show the strength and momentum of grassroots Bitcoin technical education in Zambia.
We’re running a small crowdfunding campaign on Geyser to make Bitcoin OSS Campus Ignition possible. If you care about Bitcoin OSS education and developer growth in Africa, we’d greatly appreciate your support or feedback: https://geyser.fund/project/bitdevszambiabitcoinosscampusignition
