How To Harness Meaningful Learning Experiences And Not Rely On Tuition

  1. Identify a landmark that helps you draw various connections to the school curriculum. “A Whale of A Tale” playground located near the National Museum comes to mind.
  1. Focus on salient learning points. The playground facade resembles a blue whale — good springboard to learn about characteristics and adaptations of mammals. You can borrow mammal books from our trusty library. I happen to have a comprehension passage written for third graders — and brought it along.

  1. Go through pertinent learning points with your child at the site. Grounding these facts and concepts within an out-of-the-norm experience might be useful for your child to remember them for the long term.
  2. Be open to incidental learning. The playground features a bench which contains kindness messages in our four major languages, as well as an Indian Rubber tree (useful for teaching properties of rubber). Point them out judiciously to your child in the midst of his play.
  1. Pair your learning journey with a 60 cents coffee bought at the vending machine in Singapore Management University. Be sure to savour some me time on the swing!
