Hi, I've been living as an expat in Mexico for three years now. A new mandatory phone number registration and identity linking system is being introduced here. If I don't submit my documents to my operator by June 30 so that they can link my Mexican number to my identity in the registry, my services will be blocked. I am considering getting a foreign data SIM card that would not be subject to registration in Mexico, but I am afraid that being without a Mexican number will complicate my life, especially with banks and government agencies. Do you have any recommendations on how to maintain privacy in this situation while still functioning normally at work or in business?

just quit phone numbers - it's much better without them. any app that requires a phone number is not privacy (or securiry) respecting, and in most cases, is outright spyware

if you must have sms 2fa use an online number from crypton.sh or lnvps.net

I agree. Unfortunately for the rest of the world, phone numbers are still the basis of communication. Thanks for the advice, I'll look into it and find out more about how it works.

I'd just prefer to have one permanent number that isn't linked to my identity rather than using some single-use service. It really annoys me that a number I've been using for over two years suddenly has to be registered somewhere, and they present it as protection against blackmail. I see it as the exact opposite. If corrupt Mexican officials and police officers have access to my location and my tax account, it opens the door wide to blackmail and kidnapping.

Trump should do this for all immigrants from Mexico and Central America and South America

KYC has become unavoidable in many sectors. You have to live two lives: one with KYC and one without it, and that applies to telephone numbers, banks and government agencies.
