The green line was trending up until what, the 1970s? I don't know JP history but I'd like to know what event caused the downtrend.

Nothing out of the ordinary happened, I think it was just a mix of factors, like the end of the post-war baby boom, family planning becoming more common, and some people say heavy urbanization played a role too.

Japan's negative birth rate isn't "new" news. I remember hearing about it in the 80s. What's been interesting has been very little done about it to change the pattern since then. On the other hand, the country continue too look very populated on the outside. Yet when you poke around, there are dozens of small villages practically abandoned now because folks have essentially died off without family replacement.
