I’ve been thinking a lot about independent publications and how difficult it has become for small media projects to survive in today’s digital environment.

OpenEye Magazine is an example of a platform trying to build something meaningful in a space dominated by algorithms, short attention spans, and centralized distribution channels.

It raises a bigger question:

Can independent magazines still compete without relying on ad-driven clickbait models?

In an era where content is optimized for engagement rather than depth, projects like OpenEye represent something different — slower journalism, curated storytelling, and creative independence.

But sustainability is the real challenge.

• Should independent magazines adopt subscription models?
• Should they integrate Bitcoin or Lightning payments to reduce platform dependency?
• Is niche focus the only viable strategy now?

From a creator’s perspective, owning distribution matters.

From a reader’s perspective, quality matters.

From a business perspective, cash flow matters.

So I’m curious:
What do you think is the future of independent digital publications?

Can they thrive without selling out to algorithms and advertisers?

Would you personally support media directly with sats?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.
