Churchill once stated "Democracy is the worst form of government...except for all the others". If Churchill were a technologist in 2026, he'd say the same about screens.

Like most technological paradigms, screens dominated not by pure merit but by necessity. Computers couldn't understand speech. Voice recognition was a joke. The mouse was revolutionary. Screens were the only way to interact with software - a necessary interface between human intent and machine execution.

But every paradigm has a shelf life.

Agents slash through the red tape of conventional menus, buttons, and swiping. They live inside the electronics, swim inside the data itself. Agents are the software. Screens were the steering wheel. Autonomous systems don't need steering wheels.

Agents' inevitable outperformance demands that screens be quickly put on the chopping block.

The Death of the Screen is one of the great white pills of the AI Revolution. Less doom scrolling, keyboard warrioring, and eye strain. More space for face to face interactions, grass touching, and quiet time. A major victory for the health and comfort of the user.

Before screens, the world was analog. Want to book a flight? Call a travel agent, wait on hold, spell your name three times. Need to research something? Drive to the library, hope they have the right encyclopedia, photocopy pages for 10 cents each. If pockets of the world were digital at all, it was rigidly constrained - command-line interfaces, mainframes that required you to wait in line to run calculations we'd consider trivial today. The space of compute belonged to fanatical nerds, technicians, and high-level business people who could see the value. Everyone else was locked out.

Screens and GUIs changed everything. The mouse, the trackpad, Apple's obsessive focus on user experience - these made computers usable for normal people. Democratized technology. Not just programmers, but graphic designers, lawyers, accountants, and even grunge bands. Screens delivered utility - bookkeeping, travel booking, social networking. But they also unlocked a new medium for beauty. Designers could sculpt pixels. Musicians could compose in GarageBand. Filmmakers could edit in their bedrooms.

Then came the downside.

The ability to remotely convey beauty gave way to infinite scroll algorithms designed to keep you watching. The ability to network humans gave way to faceless mobs dunking on strangers for engagement metrics. Productivity tools became digital leashes. You were supposed to use email; instead, email used you. The screen promised liberation but delivered 8-hour days hunched over a desk, eyes burning, neck aching, life happening somewhere else.

The screen's fundamental flaw is this: it demands your presence. You can't use a screen without stopping everything else. It's synchronous I/O. You query, you wait, you read, you click. Repeat. The computer can't do anything unless you're there to drive it.

This was fine when computers were dumb. But now they're not.

For decades, this was the only option. Computers couldn't understand natural language. They couldn't reason. They couldn't act autonomously. Screens were necessary because humans had to operate the software step-by-step.

But that constraint just evaporated. Agents live inside the machine. They're infinitely flexible, deeply personalized, and they work whether you're watching or not. Screens stop being mandatory. They become optional. A convenience, not a requirement. The sideshow, not the main act.

Humans tend to take for granted the ease with which we understand language. But it is only through the intense rigors of evolutionary dynamics that humans cultivated this ability. Contrast the richness of human language against even smart animals. Translating this easy human faculty into software evaded computer scientists for decades. And during that time, screens were the only game in town. You needed buttons, menus and the like to translate human intent into meaningful output.

The LLM breakthrough in natural language processing (decades in the making) finally gave machines the ability to understand human intent directly. As this technology is perfected, the barrier between humans' most basic instinct (talking) and the machine dissolves. The interface stops being a rectangle you stare into. It becomes your voice.

The breakthrough with agents like OpenClaw is orchestration: reliably translating intent into a sequence of actions that accomplish the goal. This breakthrough is equally consequential (and arguably more impressive from a 1 man team). With these two breakthroughs together, screens stop being mandatory. Inputs don't need buttons. Outputs don't need dashboards. The interface becomes invisible.

When software works without you watching, screens become checkpoints, not workstations. You review outcomes. You don't operate machinery.

When I set out to create PullThatUpJamie, my mission was to kick the podcast space up a notch with AI. To make the podcast knowledge base the Library of Alexandria it should be. A tool to enrich the lives of listeners and make it ruthlessly efficient for podcast producers to maximize the value of content.

The mission has two core focus areas:

  1. For podcasters: Make it easy and cheap to promote, publish, and extract max value from their podcast recording library.

When I started building Jamie, I knew AI would play a major role from the jump. Allowing me to do transcripts, analysis, and curated clips with modestly priced API calls. I built Jamie in modules that I knew would be accessible to high-quality agents as TOOLS to be adapted to EXACTLY what the user wants at runtime.

In the past, work was sitting in a cubicle, looking at our software tools and willing them to achieve the result. Now that we have what are effectively digital employees, our relationship changes. Instead of clicking and grinding through menus, we meet with them periodically. Instead of sitting under a fluorescent lamp typing away, we can go for a walk and text the agent over Signal to give it direction. Instead of fully synchronous click-by-click paradigms, we prompt agents with feedback as though they're a digital colleague or employee.

This is already happening!

This paradigm is already partially cooked. While not 100% seamless, it's quite good and allows even more flexibility into the asynchronous workflows we described above. Speak, don't type. Walk, don't sit. The screen becomes optional.

Justin Moon on TFTC recently made an excellent point on this front: Text walls from LLMs are great until they're not. I am certain they'll have their place, but text walls are anti-intuitive in many cases. Remember: in many AI use cases, our success is measured on human understanding and satisfaction. NOT on how many words we throw at them.

When it comes to conveying something complex or technical, a picture is almost always worth a thousand words. Imagine video, interactive schematics, diagrams, graph networks, and concept maps. These are the dark horse interfaces that will almost certainly steal the future.

That is why I so heavily emphasized the new layout of Jamie: convey the richness of connected concepts and do so while inspiring a sense of beauty and wonder.

I expect each of these UX patterns to blossom in the new agent paradigm. Setting aside far-future scenarios, what are the immediate implications of this shift?

While networked agents raise numerous concerns, I actually view the new UX paradigm they unlock as highly positive. Liberating us from the screen could be the first step in a much healthier, much more pro-human relationship with the tech that drives value in our lives.

Pros:

  • Tech Gives Us a Chance to Develop Healthier Habits:
    Face-to-face interactions: When you're not glued to a screen, you're present with the people around you
    More grass touching: Physical movement, outdoor time, actual human proximity instead of Zoom fatigue
    Better posture and ergonomics: No more hunched shoulders, neck strain, or carpal tunnel from 8-hour keyboard marathons
    More quiet/meditative time: Async workflows mean less constant interruption, more space to think
  • Breaking free from Dark Patterns:
    • Doom scrolling paradigm collapses: When there are no longer feeds or screens that enable them, the infinite scroll trap dies
    • The end of keyboard warrioring: When interactions don't occur behind a screen, perhaps the temptation to verbally assault strangers is attenuated
    • Less eye strain: Your retinas will thank you

Cons:

  • The ability to leave a screen behind does not guarantee people will. Ensconcing yourself in a fake world like "The Matrix" will probably become increasingly tempting for some. VR headsets, AR glasses, and BCIs could make screen addiction look quaint by comparison.
  • Could we port over the same problems as always? Surveillance capitalism doesn't need a screen - it just needs data. Dark patterns could migrate to voice interfaces (manipulative prompts, artificial scarcity in agent responses). The medium changes, but the incentives might not. My hope is that these types of manipulations will be easier to spot and less effective. I can recognize when a voice is shilling me something I don't need but I can't necessarily discern my scroll algorithm is manipulating my emotions/viewpoints.
  • Cognitive diminishing due to overreliance: If agents do all the thinking, we risk atrophy. I wrote about this extensively in Don't Let AI Think For You: Why I Built a Visual Search Engine for Free Thinkers. The short version: outsourcing cognition is dangerous. Use agents as tools, not replacements for your own critical thinking.

Like any tech shift, this could go really well or really badly. Usually it's a mixture of both. But I like to stay optimistic as I try to collaborate with peers and users alike to steer this in a positive direction.

What Now?What Now?

This shift is happening whether we're ready or not. The question isn't "if" screens become optional - it's who builds the world that replaces them.

For builders: Stop designing for screens. Build APIs agents can consume. Make your services headless-first, modular, and outcome-driven. The winners won't have the prettiest UI - they'll be the ones agents can talk to.

For users: Start experimenting now. Pick one agent-first tool and actually use it. Try async workflows. Try voice. Go for a walk and text your agent instead of grinding through menus. The future doesn't arrive all at once - you have to lean into it.

For investors: Bet on outcome providers, not tool providers. The companies building "better Photoshop" are walking dead. Look for agent-first architectures, headless workflows, and businesses that facilitate machine to machine commerce - like how Alby does with its Lightning-native payment rails. The Agent Economy will emerge from these forces together.

I do find it interesting that you use claw for execution. What is the difference between a well designed CD pipeline (which Claude will do for you in minutes) and openclaw? Just the flexibility? Or is there something else to it?

I think once the use case crystallizes it starts to make sense to make a deterministic program.

Probably what AI will start to do is identify common patterns and then create subroutines that match those. Almost like how OpenClaw does self healing it's almost like proactive optimization.
