Skanska wins $102M Port of Los Angeles bridge project

Skanska said Wednesday that it has been awarded a $102 million contract to build the Avalon Pedestrian Bridge and Promenade Gateway project at the Port of Los Angeles.

The 380-foot-long bridge, port officials said, will create new public access to the Wilmington Waterfront Promenade and to the Avalon Promenade Gateway, a new recreation area being built as part of the bridge project. The full project is valued at $152 million.

Engineering firm TYLin, according to the port, designed the pedestrian bridge.

"This project reflects our commitment to delivering infrastructure that strengthens communities," said James Bailey, executive vice president of Skanska USA Civil's West Coast operations.

The bridge structure as planned will be a signature concrete cable-stayed arch bridge with a crossing point over working rail operations, Skanska said. In addition, the project, which sits on a 12-acre former industrial site, will include:
A landscaped entry plaza;
Walk and overlook;
An open terrace seating area;
Pedestrian pathways;
Community gathering areas;
Two parking lots;
One restroom; and
A 40-foot-tall architectural sundial.
