So I started today thinking this wouldn’t be that hard.
I mean, Bitcoin exists, people use it, there are apps, wallets… how bad could it be?
Yeah… I underestimated this.
First problem: I don’t usually notice how often I pay for things until I try to restrict how I pay.
Small stuff becomes a problem immediately. Like ordering food, paying for something online, even something as simple as splitting money.
Most places just don’t accept Bitcoin. Not even as an option.
So then it turns into this weird loop of:
“Can I use Bitcoin here?” → No → “Okay… now what?”
I tried looking for workarounds—gift cards, third-party services, anything that could kind of bridge the gap—but it already feels like I’m doing extra steps for something that’s supposed to be simpler.
Also, fees.
I didn’t think about fees properly before starting this. Now I’m noticing them every time I even consider making a transaction.
It makes you hesitate. Like… is this small payment even worth it?
And speed too. I’m used to instant payments. Here, I actually have to think about waiting, confirmations, all that.
It’s not unusable. But it’s definitely not seamless.
At one point I almost just gave up and paid normally because it was easier… which kind of defeats the whole point of this.
So yeah, Day 1 feels less like “living on Bitcoin” and more like “trying to force Bitcoin into places it doesn’t fit yet.”
Not a great start, but also not unexpected.
Let’s see if I figure out better ways to make this work tomorrow.
Have you checked https://btcmap.org/ for your area?
There's no getting around the difficulty you're describing, but perhaps you can find some different places to shop that make it a little easier.
yeah I hadn’t checked that yet, that’s actually pretty useful
I think that’s kind of the bigger issue though… it really depends on where you are. like in places where Bitcoin is closer to being treated as actual legal tender, this experiment would probably feel way more natural. you’d just use it instead of trying to force it into systems that weren’t built for it
here it feels more like I’m working around the system rather than using it directly
I’ll check btcmap and see if there’s anything nearby I can try for Day 2 though, that might make things a bit more interesting
I hear that ai agents can use Bitcoin at https://402index.io/
Have you checked this out? What is your impreasion?
yeah this is actually pretty interesting
feels like Bitcoin makes more sense here than in my Day 1 struggles… like instead of humans forcing it into daily payments, it’s AI agents just paying each other automatically using Lightning
still feels early, but this direction honestly seems way more natural
might try something with this later in the series
