I have a real soft spot for these DIY signers like krux and specterDIY and SeedSigner. One of these days I'm going to build a krux signer with my kids. But perhaps by then they'll have even cooler DIY signers...like this:
Kern is an experimental project that explores the capabilities of the ESP32-P4 as a platform to perform air-gapped Bitcoin signatures and cryptography.
Early development uses the Waveshare ESP32-P4-WiFi6-Touch-LCD-4B.
ESP32-P4 does not contain radio (WiFi, BLE), but this board has a radio in a secondary chip (ESP32-C6 mini). Later the project will migrate to use radio-less, simpler and cheaper boards with ESP32-P4 only.
Here's a video of the Kern signer signing a 100 input PSBT in less than 10 seconds:
Very cool to see work being done on things like this.
As a comparisonAs a comparison
Early players in the car industry set the standard for future generations
Benz was a pioneer, also separately Daimler and Maybach which ultimately merged with Mercedes
Peugeot Renault and Fiat European major players
Moving to the states Ford Oldsmobile Buick Cadillac General Motors Chrysler
All setting the scene for Porsche Ferrari Lambos Bugatti some of which stem their history back to the original founders
Most notably the argument between Enzo Ferrari and Ferruccio Lamborghini about sticking to tractors
The similarities may not ever be as mainstream but the initial vision for the product and the development of the idea combined with the evolving technology will create what we see in the future π
Even now with a multitude of mass produced modern cars to choose from we still see men building kit cars from scratch
Some will buy off the shelf, some will create the shelves, that is the beauty of open source decentralized opportunities π
