He mentioned the fines would increase by 1% each consecutive year the NBA team misses the playoffs. The fines collected will be given to the top 4 NBA teams. A bonus for having a good season.

It sounds like a good idea but I think it will punish cash strapped teams even more to where they might be unable to compete due to lack of resources.

But I do think management would not implement tanking as a strategy because no one wants to lose money on purpose for a strategy that might not work.

Whitlock is trying to bring back consequences for tanking and it’s an interesting approach but I think it’s flawed.

For example my Buffalo Sabres who missed the playoffs for 14 years would have went bankrupt paying the good teams like Boston and Tampa. So not only do the good teams pound your face it but they could be the reason your team gets sold as well!

No, I think it's dumb. Just use a fully randomized lottery.

You'll still get contenders trading picks for key pieces, which allows bad teams to draft more and rebuild.

I already solved tanking...twice.

  1. Flip the draft order: winners get the best picks and top prospects go to functional franchises
  2. Only winners get game checks: tv and ticket revenues go to the winning team.

Technically, randomized picks also fix tanking but they don't incentivize winning (which I think is the real issue) and they still leave room for corruption (a la Dallas getting Flagg).

they don't incentivize winning

The league is soft, Kobe

reply

Interesting! I think this would cause more free agents to move on to struggling teams to be the man.

reply

Yeah, the league would probably have more of a trickle-down dynamic.

I think he is on the right track. They need to penalize teams for tanking, especially serial tankers but a salary fine while a fun idea will never work. I do think you can do something with revenue sharing where if teams are consistently non competitive their share of the revenue gets reduced because no one wants to watch crap basketball.

Send the losers off to Europe and take them off of tv for the end of the season!

reply

Relegation to the G league. See the Euro commies come up with good ideas sometimes.

reply

It just dawned on me that the Euro commies best idea was less communism. Haha

It would be good for NBA and G League. NBA would have another storyline to market around "who can avoid relegation" as the crappy teams fight for survival and the G league would be getting more attention as everyone wants to see which teams would move up. NBA teams might even send some players down depending on their seeding in NBA to try and help push their G league team up.

reply

Now you're really onto something. After the All Star break, the eight worst NBA teams switch places with the eight best G League squads.

reply

penalizing teams who make even the play in games.
that seems dumb.

too bad we dont have multiple leagues.
cause you could just RELEGATE mofos
