Materialism is not the same as having "lots of money". I feel like if it's materialism then they want money to sustain a modern influencer version of keeping up with the Jones's.

So you'd say someone who's extremely focused on making money but then only saves/invests it without spending much he woudn't be materialistic?

I mean, there are levels to it right? We are all materialistic to some extent. Look at the stuff you don't use in your house. And it's probably been like that since after WWll. I'm more suggesting that social media might have turbocharged the envy that watching influencers creates, especially in young girls.

I'd like to see the questions asked in the survey to see if this is more of a tangent.

I agree with this. One might want lots of money as a source of security or a source of power. I associate materialism as wanting lots of stuff, which I think is perhaps not as prevalent as it was in the '80s and '90s. (Although...thinking about amazon and how much people order perhaps I am very wrong).
