Lorenzo Kamel, a professor of international relations at the University of Turin, says President Trump needs to resolve the crisis with Iran as the 2026 football World Cup and US midterm elections are fast approaching.

“These are major priorities for him,” he said. “He’s looking for a kind of temporary truce.”

However, Kamal added “somehow the Trump administration is likely to coincide with a showdown with an increasingly uncertain outcome”.

“With the US cornered, Iran is gaining much out of war and current dynamics. From the US perspective this is a major problem,” the professor said.

“If not in the long term, the Iran crisis is also an existential threat for the way in which the US has been managing a large part of the world,”
