"In many of these cases, the software has connected social media accounts to make it all seem real. Bad actors are also spoofing real sites like Webex to add legitimacy to their attacks. If you happen to get contacted by one of these scammers on Mac, the site will encourage you to even run the virus via the terminal or a disk image file that runs the terminal for you—a clear red flag."
I can't even imagine how frustrating this risk is now with so many laid off from work and looking. I remember dealing with a similar issue when I was looking for some replacement freelance work options and I almost got duped into a $2,000 scam. The deal there was a teams meeting and then my needing to purchase a company computer to do the job's work. Not unheard of, but it had to be from a specific vendor and I had to do the purchase. I was given a "fake" digital check to deposit and then make the laptop buy in the meantime while I waited for it to clear. When I refused to wait and only buy when it cleared, the scam fell apart. But I still had to explain to my bank it was a scam attempt; they treated me like a criminal trying to pass a bad check. Fortunately I saved screenshots of the teams meeting since it was in writing.
