This is a pretty wild move by Trump, and it makes the Texas General Election Senate Race a bit of an issue for Republicans. If Paxton wins, Republicans will have to spend a hell of a lot of money just to keep the seat. Paxton has by far the most baggage between the two and is arguably the worst candidate.

With Cornyn, Texas has benefited from his leadership role, which has allowed him to secure economic and policy wins for the State. Paxton, plain and simple, will not be able to do this because not only will he be a freshman member, but he is also a lightning rod of issues. From his personal life to his political life, controversy has run wild, and that is not what you want in the Senate, nor do you want to reward it. Cornyn has also played a critical role in fundraising for Senate Republicans, helping the party secure the majority, which is now increasingly likely to be in jeopardy.

A move like this alone can create an issue for Trump in the next few months as Republicans could start to move to resist him more and more to try and help their odds in reelection.
