Buc-ee’s—the roadside travel phenomenon—seems to cater to the extremes in our society. Either customers love shopping at the place or it is yet another symbol of capitalist oppression.

I don't see the appeal of Buc-ee's, but I think Neil Gaiman was onto something when he marked out roadside attractions as places of spiritual power in the American psyche

reply

Have you been to one?

reply

Yeah, but my memories of it were vague. isn't it just like any other gas station convenience store, just maybe bigger and nicer?

reply

The bar is low to be honest. People mostly comment on the size. To me the service, quality, and cleanliness are what make it special. My nephew worked at one for a while. Very well run.

I will also say I stopped at one on a recent trip to Texas and at 4am I was able to get coffee, breakfast, and gas with no wait. Everything was running like it was the middle of the day.

It reminds me of In N Out. Excellence is clearly in this organization. It's rare these days.

reply

Yeah, I do vaguely remember it being cleaner and nicer than a typical gas stop

reply

During busy hours they have multiple people cleaning the bathrooms throughout the day

reply

I've never stopped at one. We're a Loves family on roadtrips.

reply

Pretty simple to me. No lines. Get everything in one stop. Clean bathrooms. Honestly, it's beautiful to see something so well thought out.

Now, I don't see the hype over going to one as a destination. I think that's just human tendency to follow fads. It was so hyped to me that I was negative going in. Won me over though.

I went to Buc-ees on the way back from Austin. That place is wild.

reply

I still haven't gone inside one

reply

Hope you like giant soda.

Only cup sizes available were L and XL which looked about twice the size of L and XL drinks in Canada.

I got a L and put a ton of ice in it. When in Rome as they say.

reply

I like their brisket sandwich

reply

I didn't eat that and then everyone said why didn't you get the brisket sandwich.

reply

see!! lol

reply

My brother in law got the brisket sandwich. I had a club sandwich.

reply

At least you were in Texas, where there are plenty of places to get good brisket

It'd recommend this. Had it twice.

reply

It’s certainly a sight. I’ve been a few times. I don’t mind it, but it’s also overwhelming

reply

I've never stopped into one

reply

you should try it out

reply

Capitalist oppression?!! First time I am learning about such term!
