Obsession

What an insane movie.

TLDR: ā€œObsession,ā€ is messy, tense, scary, unrelenting and likely going in my Top 10 for the year.

The most interesting thing about this movie is how badly you want it to end, but not in a bad way. You want the characters to get out of it. You want the tension to break. You want some kind of release from it.

I saw multiple people walking out and in of theater throughout, I imagine they must have gotten triggered somewhere. And that is the weird part, because after a while you start feeling sorry for almost everyone involved including yourself.

There are a dozen or so undertones running through the movie, and most people will pick up on them.

Control, desire, jealousy, envy, lust, memory, guilt, creepiness, and obsession itself.

It is all sitting underneath the surface while the movie keeps pushing you deeper into this weird manufactured relationship that feels impossible to escape for all the main characters.

The actress playing the main character is quite incredible. She moves through so many different dimensions of the role that it never feels flat or faked. Actually it’s very precise. It is one of the better horror performances I have seen in a while, probably the best since the original Scream in terms of someone making the whole thing feel alive, scared, fragile, and dangerous at the same time. Shoutout Drew Barrymore.āœŒļø

Definitely watch it in theaters if you get the chance. The audience banter was actually enjoyable and kind of needed. It gave the room some comic relief because the movie gets uncomfortable in a way that makes you feel like you are trapped in the relationship with them. Weird feeling, but they did a great job pushing that button over and over and over.

I am not sure who the writer/director is, but he was inventive with how he scared the audience. The movie does not just rely on jump scares. It builds dread through timing, silence, and gosh those sound effects give that feeling something is very wrong.

The music has this thin hazy reverb to it that basically sets the tone the whole way through. It feels like a Korg memory key melting down into dreadful chords.

I could totally see them doing a sequel.

Also, I’m almost certain I saw a Bitcoin logo a couple times throughout the movie. It happens fast, but it is there, and it actually kind of lines up with where the movie goes toward the end.

This is how you do it subliminally.

It has this strange nostalgic feeling to it, but it is also genuinely scary at times. I had to close my eyes because I could feel the beats coming before they hit, which almost makes it worse.😳

Overall, it is absolutely worth watching, but definitely not for kids and not for anyone that doesn’t want to be uncomfortable for 120min.

Sounds very good! I’d like to see it. Thank you!
