Parent-Teacher Meeting may seem like a checkpoint of your child’s progress at school.

But it may also be a verdict of the parent’s efforts at home.

Now, my children’s personalities are as different as vanilla and chocolate. However, one thing both teachers pointed out is that they need to hone their fine motor skills. In particular, they need to hold a pencil and write more.

Which is something that I haven’t been focusing on. Probably because teaching someone to write can be an exasperating process.

Last Saturday, I watched my son struggle to write 起得早 for 10-15 minutes. How did I learn to write fluently with nary a thought? How come my dad got away scot-free?

Anyway, looks like developing my children’s fine motor skills is something that I need to prioritise this holiday.

Young learn fast.

Will they use cursive script in the Latin alphabet? I ask because it took me a long time to develop intelligible and what's considered beautiful handwriting, and I did that for myself. These characters are complex, but they don't seem hard to write—unless there's a specific thickness required for each line or something like that. I imagine that this requirement is a cultural thing there.

I’m afraid penmanship isn’t emphasised in our educational system these days. My third grade teacher taught us to write cursive script, but these days, the emphasis has been centered on getting students to benefit from learning with AI. Priorities have changed haha

Seems better to focus on skills that will actually used

Take it easy, teach him with the same love you show to those who aren't your children. Isn't that contradictory? It's easier to teach a child who isn't your own than your own child. A total irony.

I was smart enough to choose simpler characters today haha. and oh I bought snacks so that he could gobble and write characters at the same time. kinda like training a dog haha
