The educational system has become an arms race, and many parents feel compelled to spend tons of money on tuition and ensure that their children are ahead of the competition.
However, with the prevalence of resources out there, it may be financially prudent for you to exploit the opportunities made available by AI tools. Customising your study materials for your kid also helps caters to his learning needs and interests. Not to mention how it aids in family bonding.
Base44 empowered me to make an app for my primary school-going kid. I could specify the kinds of categories I needed for him. As you can see, I have zeroed in on P4 Grammar, P4 Vocabulary and P4 Science. I also stretched myself a little by adding PSLE-style questions so that I could get him to try them whenever he was ready.
The bummer was that I had to add the questions, one at a time. Incidentally, such preparatory questions from past school exam papers are not difficult to find. Google and you’ll find a treasure trove. However, after I inputted various questions, I could promptly pass my phone to my son and let them attempt them. Instant gratification has never been so rewarding.
I have about 50 questions at the P4 level and am raring to add more.
Another advantage of investing effort into typing out the questions is that I started to spot patterns and trends after a while. It has been commonly said that English tests everything under the sun, but I reckon that there are high-utility, high-frequency words that are popular choices for exam questions. After I spotted some patterns, I prompted ChatGPT to come out with informative posters such as these:
Isn’t it amazing how ChatGPT has the ability to make flawless posters these days? In any case, I am relieved that these powerful AI tools empower me to track and chart my son’s learning progress.
And not having to spend a single cent!
I am waiting to see what type of educational tools are going to be created through the use of AI. I'm happy to wait it out until they're more correct and easily configurable to the child's needs.
what kind of app are you holding out for? Do you already have a criteria in mind or is it a case of you know it when you come across it?
Preferably a device without a screen so it's all conversational. Also doesn't just give away the answer to something straight away. It probes a little or gives hints. Something like that.
I like the idea of vocalizing our questions in order to get the AI tool to do what we want. Makes it more of a two-way interaction
