If you're going this route, consider NIP-SPACES as a superior alternative (or complement) to NIP-05.

Key advantages over NIP-05:

  • True ownership: Your name is permanently anchored to Bitcoin via a Merkle root. No registrar, no ICANN, no domain renewal, no one can revoke or hijack it.
  • Verifiable sovereignty: Anyone can independently verify ownership with a Bitcoin node using a Merkle proof. No trusted third parties required.
  • Censorship resistance: Unlike DNS-based NIP-05, which ultimately depends on centralized infrastructure that can be pressured or compromised.
  • Bitcoin security model: Your identity inherits the same immutability and neutrality as Bitcoin itself.

NIP-05 gives you convenience through DNS, like a bank gives you convenience, with all the same drawbacks.

NIP-SPACES gives you actual digital property rights secured by Bitcoin’s Proof of Work. It’s the natural evolution for those building truly sovereign Nostr setups.

wonder if NIP-SPACES can work someday for relay connections too, so i could have my haven relay work through that instead of DNS.
