How Long Does a Hard Drive Last? A Question That's Worth 800 Billion.

One question has been on my mind lately:

How long does a hard drive actually last?

I'm not asking because I need to replace a computer. I'm thinking about the hard drives that were accidentally thrown away years ago—the ones that held the private keys to Bitcoin.

The most famous example is James Howells, whose hard drive containing the keys to approximately 8,000 BTC ended up in a landfill in 2013. More than a decade has passed, raising an intriguing question: if that drive were found today, would the data still be recoverable?

I know that hard drives can fail mechanically, but the data itself is stored magnetically on the platters. If those platters remain intact, could specialized data recovery experts still retrieve the private keys? Or do years underground—surrounded by moisture, pressure, and corrosion—make recovery virtually impossible?
