They don't have to trust the bridge nodes. The proofs themselves just have to come from somewhere. The compact nodes are super light, remember and don't have the necessary data to generate proofs themselves.
But once they get the proofs no trust is involved.

If I am reading this correctly, the compact nodes have to trust the Full (Bridge) nodes for proofs.
This seems like it won't help with decentralization since the Compact nodes cannot prove anything without the Full Nodes.
