July 9, 2026 — A historic $244.6 million investment to fund comprehensive broadband infrastructure projects across all 110 chapters of the Navajo Nation has been approved by the 25th Navajo Nation Council.

According to the council, the approved capital will fund immediate and long-term network deployments while serving as critical matching funds for the federal Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program, which is ultimately projected to connect approximately 31,000 Navajo Nation homes to high-speed internet.

The infrastructure rollout will also leverage a hybrid technology strategy to rapidly close the digital divide across the region, their July 2 release stated.

While 52 chapters are currently connected to existing fiber optic infrastructure, the remaining 58 underserved chapters will initially receive low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite internet service via Starlink within 90 days, the council announced.

Concurrently, long-term fiber construction will continue to expand across the territory, running alongside a three-phase cellular initiative designed to scale up 5G capabilities by upgrading fiber-connected towers, extending fiber to additional sites, and constructing new towers in unserved areas.

My Thoughts 💭My Thoughts 💭

Native American reservations can be locations of untapped growth. Due to underinvestment due to tribal laws and federal land rights companies are often not comfortable with the risk of investment on tribal lands. But with 31,000 Navajos gaining access to high speed internet means SN has a potential to capture that growth and get zaps into the hands of Navajos! Time to fire up the marketing machine on the Rez!!
