Yeah I think taking the self-custody pill right away is a good practice.
Custodial solutions come and go, but if you have stored those 12 words, you’re (often!) good to go.
Even still, seed phrases are not the gold standard UX.
Maybe for normies it would be cool if they could use their phone’s trusted execution environment (fingerprint, face ID) as the private key. I think Breez had something along these lines if I’m not mistaken.
