This is what made whatever sliver of truth he had left vanish. His story was already a strech before the accusation and once they started flying people just looked and went wait.... this doesnt actually make sense.

Yep, doesn't look good. I think the high end academia world is similar to the C-level suite in big corporations. Half the accolades are embellished until someone does some actual work and finds that the factual record doesn't quite match what was put on the PR piece sent out to the public. But the name of the game is how much attention and grant business you can bring to the school, ergo tenure as a reward. It's a very messy dog-eat-dog world there in a very small group of people running the show.
Yep, I don't think anyone will have a full grip on all the real facts until the hype blows over and the "let me get 5 seconds of fame online" comments disappear. By then, he will be forgotten and it will be buried until someone writes in a book.
