Polling for notifications recently, I discovered that I lost my hat.

I had told myself, "I should not let SN become yet another FOMO/doomscrolley timesink, and simply close the browser tab after making my last good comment", answered an important question from @Scoresby that appeared in my desktop notifications, then faded away from the world of the DOM and the zap. Faded bitterly, because I'm getting squeezed out of digital sovereignty by planned obsolescence and the rising costs of validation, performative participation, and hardware maintenance.

I'm not complaining about losing my hat; I have a general idea of how the wind works, and agree with your goal of encouraging people to "zap early, zap often" rather than stack alone...

I'm wondering why I should not delete my last good comment.

I don't understand. How does this comment relate to this topic?

reply

SN is noisy and even if some parts are pleasant saloons or hopping parties, my general concern is with an overall UX that fails to give me joy.

I do appreciate "number goes up", the zaps are obviously an interesting and effective incentive ... however, I'm far from convinced about optimality of little pseudofinancial features like the hat, horse, and gun, let alone the unsolveable nightmare of notification triage.

SN makes it much simpler to yak about stuff than produce quality writing.

But I think talking and producing quality writing may not be mutually exclusive. A good chat may lead you in novel ways and inspire your writing
