Yes, re: common ground. There's a lot of that to be had as long as there's mutual respect. If you start from respect, then it often stays there, in my experience. Which can also mean you let someone ignore you because they cannot deal with whatever image you represent in their head.

As for turning perspective into advantage... I don't know. I generally don't think in "advantage" but in terms of solutions to problems.
