Newer stackers shouldn't trust @mallardshead or @davidw, just because we do.

For instance, I zap your posts immediately because I've come to respect your thinking and am interested to read what you have to say, not because of how others regard you.

It's almost like paying a subscription to a blog. I'm not going to pay to read the random thoughts of someone I don't know and who has no track record.

If there's a great, thought-provoking post, that I can judge to be high-quality, then I'll zap it regardless of authorship. Those kinds of posts are not generally what we're talking about, though.

But I would also say that the users of SN do a lot of work to sort out high quality posters and currently the only way it surfaces is through history of zaps. It might be a good thing if that work could be surfaced more easily.

In my perfect world, whatever comes next is as transparent and easy to understand as money is the moderator. Too often the karma/merit/seniority systems are difficult to understand.
