Was a matter of when not if. Now we will see if he is still Aaron Donald.

reply

I think he’s still going to be awesome but maybe not for as many snaps per game, kinda like Chris Jones.

reply

He will definitely be awesome against the 49ers non existent starting LG. Hopefully he decides to ramp up for week 2.

reply

I’m still skeptical because he has been away for 2 years

his stamina will be a problem and he is in his mid 30s not exactly a spring chicken

reply

He’s 4 years younger than Calais Campbell, who is still great and was never even close to as good as Donald.

reply

That's not a good comp in my opinion. Donald is an undersized speed rusher from the inside whereas Campbell is just a monster that dominates you with size and strength. I think speed and explosiveness don't age as well but I still think Donald will be really good. Not all pro or DPOY really good but really good.

reply

undersized but very strong

undersized was his pre draft scouting report

reply

I don't mean undersized as in incapable of moving guys I just meant in general he is small for a DT. He is strong but it was really his explosiveness that made him great.

He’s a freak show.

That’s fair but Donald wasn’t exactly fading when he retired and he’s had no additional wear and tear.

He could lose a few steps and still be as impactful as Campbell. Plus, even if he collapses to just being an above average DT, that would still be a problem for O-lines because of Garret and Young on the edges.

reply

Agreed. That DLine is ridiculous. Don't forget Poona Ford. He will push the C right back into the QB to flush him for the other guys.

Campbell? Calais?

Also, I just realized that while Campbell isn't totally irrelevant to my point, the guy I meant to reference is Cam Heyward. He's more like a year older but is more similar physically.

reply

Calais is still great? he hasn’t retired yet?

reply

No, but was still good last season

reply

He doesn't need to be vintage Aaron Donald with that DLine.

reply

I’m skeptical of their defense despite their flashy trades for Garrett and cornerback

why do we assume a 39 year old quarterback will have another great year or be healthy

There are legitimate concerns about special teams and the secondary

reply

I think their depth sucks but their starters are awesome. Look at the WRs beyond Puka and Adams. Look at the CBs beyond the starters. Their interior LBs aren't very good.

They are really relying on their studs staying healthy.
