Only 3% of US workers say they have lost their jobs due to AI.
A YouGov survey published by Fortune (August 29) found that of 1,250 workers, 3% reported being laid off attributable to AI since 2023, compared to 6% who found employment thanks to it and 9% who were promoted due to their AI skills.
This data directly contradicts the corporate narrative: tech companies are projecting nearly 80,000 layoffs by 2026, and a growing number are publicly justifying these cuts "because of AI."
Either the job apocalypse is unfolding more slowly than advertised, or AI is being used as a pretext for ordinary layoffs.
Not quite true. There's a whole slice of the economy on the freelance/contractor side that got nuked since 2023 and had to pivot to other channels. I'm one of them as a former writer and now e-commerce. But they don't count. They're not payroll slaves officially tracked on corporate records. They only show up as an operating expense that could be reduced by AI.
