The author was Reynolds Price, and the book is called Three Gospels. The first two parts are his translations of Mark and John, and the third is his own original attempt at a gospel.

Price is dead now, but he lived a very interesting life -- including being miraculously cured after having a dream where Jesus carried him into the Sea of Galilee). He wrote another book called Letter to a Man in the Fire which is also well worth the time.
