Don't understand the hype for GTA! It's so hype that it gets people who don't normally even play games to want to play.

I played San Andreas, GTA4, and GTA5 a lot, but usually only for the story. I would get bored after completing the story. You can only raid military bases so many times before it gets boring, even with a jetpack.

I think GTA5 was the first game to have a serious online mode, but I never played it much because the players are quite toxic, like in many massively popular online games. So I guess it's not really my game, and I'm not sure it ever was.

I'm like the opposite.

I grew up playing all of these at different friends/ relatives houses, Vice city, GTA4, GTA5. They were fun, but always just seemed like sandbox games with some missions etc.

6 seems like it'll be a good balance of GTA freedom+ RDR2 realism + actual fun gameplay loops and progression

reply

Same. That's why the hype always surprises me, it just seems to be on another level compared to other games. But among people who play games regularly, I don't know too many who would say GTA is their favorite.

Maybe all there is to it is that it’s extremely mid

The lowest common denominator of games

Like the fast food of gaming I guess?

Haha it reminds me of Chick Fil A recently launching a chicken-and-waffles sandwich. Massive hype, and I got stuck in a 20 car drive thru line due to people lining up for it (I didn't realize that they had released a new sandwich when I got in line, otherwise I would have avoided). Since I was there, decided might as well try this new sandwich, and it turned out to be pretty mid. Definitely not worth lining up for.

Like the fast food of gaming I guess?

Haha I like this but unfortunately Rockstar Games does spend a lot of time on their games.

Maybe FIFA is the fast food of games, because there’s a “new” one every year.

Maybe it's nostalgia? Maybe because AAA RPGs are rare?

reply

yeah could be, it definitely seems to draw from a wider net than just "core gamers", and a lot of that could be nostalgia
