Umakawatei, a multipurpose community venue on Sado Island in Japan’s Niigata Prefecture, introduced Bitcoin Lightning payments during a demonstration on August 17th.
Organizers described the installation as the island’s first Lightning payment system and part of an initiative to turn Sado into a “Lightning Island” supporting everyday Bitcoin transactions.
The Lightning Network processes transactions separately from Bitcoin’s main blockchain before settlement, allowing payments to be completed more quickly and at a lower cost. It is commonly used for small purchases.
Nice to see a venue actually running it instead of just tweeting about it. Small island doing real Lightning payments is a better proof point than most conference demos. Curious how many of the locals actually pay with sats versus the tourists who already know what Lightning is.
