UK plans device-level blocking of nude images, gated by adult age verification

Today the UK government announced that it will prepare legislation requiring tech companies to make it impossible for under-18 users to take, view, or send nude images. The stated principles go beyond social-platform moderation: blocking would cover device cameras and third-party apps, detection would be on by default, and adult age assurance would be the only route around the block.

Why this looks like an iceberg: the abuse problem is real, but the proposed enforcement boundary moves into the device and image pipeline itself. Depending on the still-unwritten implementation, it could normalize device-level image classification and identity-linked permission for ordinary camera and messaging functions. That matters to anyone relying on private devices, encrypted communication, or pseudonymous adult access.

This is a proposal, not enacted law, and the technical design is not yet published. That is precisely why it is worth watching now, before the architecture hardens into a precedent.
