I mean, the CPI is a basket, you morons. Every idiot can pick the excessive high-ticket items and say "look, the average is wrong."

Chart of the century(with wages overlaid) are better for this kind of silly gotcha:

pick the excessive high-ticket items

The items in the chart (OP) are very important in people's lives, but I see your point.

reply

so is food. And gas. And tech. And clothes. and travels. but the economically infantile argument wouldn't work as well then, would it?

reply

I don't know the data for those items!

reply

you can go look them up, they're readily available.

newsflash: they're down or below wage-growth or CPI

reply

I believe so. But we were getting back to the old debate about which items and weights should be used to calculate the CPI.

reply

yes.

And regardless of which ones we pick and how much, there will inevitably a bunch of above-average/outlier ones, and a future 0x/River can post a chart like that saying "uh, look, metric broken because ice cream and t-shirts with Queen Taylor have increased way more!"

Yeah, knock me down with a feather -.-
