Isaiah 61:1 is one of the important prophecies concerning the mission of the Messiah. It speaks of God sending His Anointed One to bring redemption, healing, and freedom to those who are suffering.

«“The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is upon me, for the LORD has anointed me…”»

  1. “The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is upon me”

This speaks of God’s power and calling. The one whom God sends does not act merely by his own strength, but through the power of the Holy Spirit.

In the New Testament, Jesus applies this passage to His own mission in Luke 4:18–19. Therefore, Christians understand Isaiah 61 as a prophecy pointing toward Christ.

  1. “To bring good news to the poor”

The Good News is first brought to the poor and those who are marginalized.

“Poor” does not refer only to a lack of money. It can also describe those who are humble, powerless, oppressed, and aware of their need for God.

→ The Kingdom of God is not reserved only for those who have power or status.

  1. “To comfort the brokenhearted”

God does not ignore the brokenhearted.

The Bible shows that salvation is not merely about dealing with sin in a legal sense. It also includes healing, comfort, and the restoration of the whole person.

  1. “To proclaim that captives will be released”

This is a powerful image of freedom.

People can be held captive by sin, fear, despair, injustice, or circumstances from which they cannot free themselves.

The mission of the Messiah is to proclaim that captivity is not humanity’s final destiny.

  1. “Prisoners will be freed”

The central idea here is liberation.

God does not simply tell people to “endure their circumstances.” He acts to restore their dignity and freedom.

In summary

Isaiah 61:1 reveals a God who:

  • comes to the poor,
  • heals the brokenhearted,
  • frees those who are captive,
  • and restores those who have lost hope.

In Christianity, Jesus is the One who declares that this prophecy is fulfilled in Him (Luke 4:18–21).

A profound way to read this passage is:

God’s power is not given to dominate the weak, but to serve, heal, restore, and set them free.
