🤖 OpenAI Says Safety Could Slow Frontier AI Development
OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar says the company is prepared to slow the development of frontier AI systems if researchers determine that doing so is necessary for safety.
The comments come as concerns grow across the AI industry about whether safety measures are keeping pace with rapidly advancing model capabilities.
OpenAI has publicly stated that when development or deployment would create an unacceptable safety risk, it may slow or stop work on systems that cannot be sufficiently safeguarded. The company says this principle has already influenced decisions around recent model development.
The debate is becoming increasingly important as AI systems take on more autonomous tasks, including coding and research. OpenAI says it is still working to understand how to safely manage increasingly capable systems, particularly the possibility of AI accelerating future AI research.
At the same time, the industry faces a difficult balance: continuing rapid innovation while ensuring that monitoring, alignment, cybersecurity and human oversight remain strong enough to manage emerging risks.
For OpenAI, the message is increasingly clear: capability cannot be separated from safety.
As frontier AI becomes more powerful, the question may not simply be how quickly these systems can be developed — but whether safety systems can keep pace with them.
