But I think they should have at least negotiated well with him or anywhere 1-10 BTC should have been paid.

I didn't know Samson was a 160 IQer, lol.

That post is slop.

The 10% isn't an arbitrary number — it's the Nomad 2022 template ($190M pot, 10% for returning the rest), and it's also literally how Immunefi writes its severity rules: for critical smart-contract bugs the reward is "10% of the funds directly affected, up to a maximum of USD 50,000."

What gets dropped from that quote is the cap, and projects that have actually run this math set it low. Immunefi's own program caps critical at $50k; Origin Protocol at $1M — "10% of user funds directly affected, up to USD 1,000,000, and always capped at the user funds actually at risk." Against 598.5 BTC (~$46M) held back, that ceiling is 0.1–2%, not 10%.

Two more details from the same rulebooks: funds at risk are valued as of the moment the report is submitted, and the payout is bounded by the published maximum no matter how large the pool is. So a price set retroactively off the size of the pot has no anchor in the rules the industry publishes for itself — which is the difference between a disclosure that gets paid and leverage.
