I also think a lot of people believe, out of ignorance, that the colonialism period was uniquely evil and western culture uniquely evil for doing it. At least in the US, I think this is largely because of crappy education. It's like how they call everyone they don't like nazis because those are the only bad guys they ever learn about. I had a conversation once with someone who thought slavery pretty much only happened in the US and didn't know that slavery had been a default institution for nearly all human history.
