I wouldn’t have tried this in Singapore - this weird combination of satsumaimo (sweet potatoes) and vanilla ice cream. But I’m in Kagoshima which is famous for its satsumaimo, so of course it’s practically obligatory that I treat my taste buds to new flavours. Eapecially since I can imagine that the satsumaimo I’m tucking into were grown on Sakurajima whose volcanic ash surely gives its produce the extra burst of umami. Nothing like engaging my vivid imagination to romanticise my dessert. Well, I’m not intoxicated to the extent that I will claim that the satsumaimo blends harmoniously with the ice cream. But I thought it’s a nuanced dessert comprising two kinds of sweetness that don’t crash with each other. A unique dessert that delivered in terms of simple originality and freshness.
