I’m John, former CCTV Team Leader and Cat 1 Gold Standard ARC supervisor.
I’ve handled thousands of real incidents — break‑ins, false alarms, system failures, and everything in between.
Most homeowners think their CCTV is “fine”, but I see the same mistakes every day. Here are five that matter:
1. Cameras pointed at the wrong thing
People film the garden, not the entry points. Doors and windows matter more than fences.
2. No night‑time testing
IR glare, reflections, and overexposure ruin half of the footage I see. Test your cameras at midnight, not midday.
3. Motion detection set to “default”
Default sensitivity = false alarms.
Default zones = missed events.
4. No tamper protection
A camera that can be unplugged or twisted is basically decorative.
5. No off‑site backup
If the NVR gets stolen, your evidence is gone. Cloud clips or remote snapshots solve this.
I break down real incidents and practical CCTV setups on my podcast CCTV Unlocked, which is available on Fountain if you want to support with boosts or stream sats.
