Our peers in econ, certainly deserve a share for doing such an insufficient job.
Cynical political grifters are probably the chief culprits though.
I actually give ourselves a bit of a pass because these are students arriving with these attitudes already, before having taken much if any econ in college.

Not necessarily. How many students get a teaching credential to teach high school social studies who've never taken even Econ 101?
How did we allow our field to be so marginalized that antithetical ideas proliferate so broadly and social studies teachers can have no exposure to econ?
If basically no one understands (or has even been exposed to) our ideas after all this time, that has to be at least partially on us. Sure, there's some suppression of economic thinking, but it's not like there are no economists at major institutions. Economists are all over the damn place and are having damn near no impact on the general understanding or our subject.
Honest answer: physics/engineering envy. Economists are all trying to be rockstar data scientists and researchers.
Also, the mathematical approach to teaching econ has made it inaccessible to many students. Especially those who never had an ambition to go into a technical field, and wanted to become a teacher.

I'm shocked how many students really think the government has the ability to make things better, and that the chief problem is corporate power.
It's not just students. I forgive students because it's part of the journey to be wrong... and to find out that you are. And then, when you're a bit older, you'd be wiser. Because you learned that you're wrong, right?
WRONG! Almost everyone I know outside of my Bitcoin frens is like this. And it really bothers me, because at times it becomes impossible to have a normal discussion with almost anyone outside of our little edge scene. It's always that gov-must-do-this, gov-must-do-that. To the tune of an alarm clock almost. How screwed are we if in 2026, all everyone can think of is an appeal to the authorities to effect change?

It's happened to me a lot with people at the church I go to... and it's surprised me when we talk in the men's meetings... all their hope is that the government will do X thing or that they'll remove Lula from power in the elections
That's it... their hope is placed in a man, and if Lula wins the elections this October, they'll even get depressed... and the saddest thing for me is to think that they are believers and yet they still put their hope in men and not in God

I probably need to build a repertoire of well-identified (and easy to narrate) papers showing how government policies lead to poor outcomes, and then teach those papers more.
